DESCRIPTION

Syringa x ‘Baby Kim’ (Baby Kim® Lilac) is a compact, fragrant, and easy-to-grow lilac that captures all the beauty of classic lilacs in a smaller, more manageable form. This Proven Winners® selection blooms heavily in mid to late spring, producing clusters of violet-purple buds that open to soft lavender flowers. The blooms are richly fragrant and attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and pollinators while filling the garden with a timeless spring scent. Its deep green foliage stays clean and glossy through summer, maintaining a tidy, rounded shape without pruning.

Ideal for smaller gardens, foundation plantings, borders, and patio containers, Baby Kim Lilac provides the look and fragrance of traditional lilacs without the size or maintenance demands. Even when not in bloom, its compact, well-branched habit offers structure and texture to garden beds.

Care

‘Baby Kim’ thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, performing best when given at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. It prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils but adapts well to most garden conditions as long as drainage is good. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots, then reduce watering as the plant matures. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and moderate temperature fluctuations. Pruning is generally unnecessary but can be done immediately after flowering to maintain shape or remove spent blooms. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote vigorous growth and abundant flowering.

Growth Habit

This dwarf lilac maintains a dense, mounded form, growing approximately 2½ to 3 feet tall and wide at maturity. Its compact habit makes it perfect for smaller landscapes or containers where space is limited, yet it delivers a full-sized lilac experience in terms of color, fragrance, and charm. Despite its size, it offers exceptional bloom power and a tidy appearance all season long.

‘Baby Kim’ is hardy in USDA Zones 3-8, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of climates, from northern regions with cold winters to more temperate southern zones. It withstands winter temperatures as low as -40°F and performs beautifully in areas with cold winters followed by mild springs.

Toxicity

Lilacs, including ‘Baby Kim’, are non-toxic to humans and pets. They are also deer-resistant and generally unaffected by most pests or diseases, making them an excellent low-maintenance choice for family-friendly gardens.
