Description

Silver Dollar Eucalyptus or Eucalyptus cinerea is a small evergreen tree or shrub native to Australia. It is an annual in our zone (7).  The leaves are round, fragrant and an attractive silver color, hence the common name, silver dollar tree. The bark is reddish brown and peels on smaller stems and becomes gray and stringy on the trunk as the tree matures. This aromatic evergreen tree is native to Australia.

Care

Plant eucalyptus trees in full sun and well-draining soil. They are adaptable to most soil types as long as the soil drain well. Full sun or part shade. Water when the top inch of soil is dry, avoid letting it fully dry out, and prune regularly to maintain its size. They require high light and, if possible, should be moved outside during summer if you're growing it as a houseplant.

Growth Habit

It is fast-growing, reaches up to 10-15 feet, and benefits from annual pruning. It is sensitive to freezing, making it ideal for pots in cooler climates, where it can be brought indoor. The blue green leaves hold the scented oil that gives the tree its lovely smell. The silver dollar eucalyptus has pretty white flowers, attractive bark, and distinctive foliage.

Toxicity

All parts of the plant (leaves, stems, and essential oils) all contain compounds like eucalyptol that can cause gastrointestinal distress, such as drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and, in severe cases, weakness or seizure; deer resistant.
