Persimmon trees are native to the southeastern United States. They produce round, orange fruit, around 1-2” in diameter, with a honey-like flavor. This variety also has distinct, blocky, dark grey bark, adding a touch of visual interest to your landscape.

Growth Habit

Female trees produce large orange-brown fleshy fruit that are edible after the first frost. Produces white to greenish-yellow blooms in the spring. 35 to 60 ft. tree is lovely enough to be used as an ornamental, with golden fall foliage and attractive deep orange fruit that will hang 'til mid-winter, lending color to the winter landscape.

Care

The most important factors for your Persimmon will be sunlight and watering needs. They generally prefer well-drained soil and full sun, or 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day. It likes well-drained, moist soil that is slightly acidic.

Toxicity

Persimmons are safe for your dog to eat and are full of vitamins C and A. However, the seeds and pit can cause intestinal blockage leading to various digestive problems. The seeds and pit aren't toxic, and they must be removed if you feed your dog a persimmon. Deer eat persimmons, although they are not their most preferred food choice. The fruits, leaves, and twigs from the persimmons make excellent forage.
