Description

The Giant of Italy Parsley is an attractive annual, large growing parsley with dark green leaves that are known for being easy to cut! This variety has strong stems, making it one of the best parsley varieties for fresh market sales. Parsley is sometimes considered a perennial in our zone (8) but we categorize it as an annual just to be safe. Parsley is considered to be a biennial, not a perennial (in zones 8-10). What this means is that it grows into a plant in the first season and then after the winter and it's cold temperatures, it blooms, creates seeds and then dies. If you don't grow it that way, you may just replant in spring, letting it grow all summer and winter.

Care

To promote the healthiest and most abundant foliage, plant Italian Parsley in full sun with a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight per day. Parsley requires regular watering to prevent it from drying out and bolting. When watering parsley, aim to keep the soil on the moist side, but not soggy. When parsley flowers, it signals the plant has entered its reproductive phase, causing leaves to become bitter and less flavorful. Hardy on zones 8-10.

Growth Habit

Parsley is considered to be a biennial, not a perennial (in zones 8-10). What this means is that it grows into a plant in the first season and then after the winter and it's cold temperatures, it blooms, creates seeds and then dies. If you don't grow it that way, you may just replant in spring, letting it grow all summer and winter. An heirloom from Italy, it grows 18–20 inches tall and rebounds fast after cutting, so one patch can keep a kitchen supplied all season.

Toxicity

Although you might think it's harmless, Parsley is considered toxic to dogs. However, it doesn't seem to be toxic to cats. It's actually a good plant for cats to snack on and is are also often high in vitamins and minerals. Not considered deer or rabbit resistant.
