block.Althaea officinalis, commonly called marsh mallow, is a herbaceous perennial here Chattanooga's zone 7 (USDA zones 3-9) native to ditches, stream banks, wetlands, swamp margins, and other moist areas. All parts of this plant contain mucilage and can be used to thicken soups, stews, and other dishes. The roots and leaves have traditionally been used as an herbal remedy to sooth and reduce inflammation of the mucous membranes in the mouth, throat, and stomach. What's kind of cool is that in ancient times, the roots were cooked with honey to create a sweet confection and medicine. These treats are the precursors of modern, commercially available marshmallows, although they no longer contain marsh mallow root extract (marshmallows are mostly sugar now days).
While this plant really wants continuously moist soil, it doesn’t want to be soaking in water or in an actual wetland (under water). Insure good drainage and avoid standing water. Hardy in Zones 3-9.
The Marshmallow root is yellow-white and sweet. It is similar in taste to a parsnip. The roots can be harvested in the fall for drying. It is a branching plant that reaches 36 to 48 inches in height. The stems are slightly wooly and the leaves are soft. The flowers reach 2 inches across, have 5 petals and range in color from white to reddish/white. Hummingbirds enjoy the sweet flower nectar.
Marshmallow is generally considered safe. It has no reported side effects. It appears to be safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, although you should check with your doctor before taking it. Studies suggest that marshmallow may lower blood sugar levels. So people with diabetes should talk to their doctors before taking marshmallow. Marshmallow root is considered safe to use for dogs and cats. Deer and rabbits don't eat it but birds and butterflies love it
