Elatior begonias (Begonia x hiemalis) bloom have a double flowers are the eye-catcher par excellence with their deep yellow inside and intense red. Profuse bloomer with large, showy flowers covering glossy, vigorous foliage. This hybrid of begonias was created by crossing tuberous begonia with a wax begonia and is a close relative of the the rex begonia. Cheerful color for garden's edge and indoor or outdoor containers. These are not hardy in our zone (7) but the corms can be dug up, stored for the winter and replanted the next spring.
Tolerant of sun, humidity and mildew. Prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil. Try mixing these sun tolerant begonias with other medium vigor plants in hanging baskets, upright containers and in well-drained landscape soil. These begonias prefer moist but not wet, well-draining soil. Plants will perform best with limited overhead watering, early enough in the day to dry completely before nightfall. Unnecessarily wet foliage at night can promote disease issues. Otherwise, the plants are largely carefree.
12-18 in. tall, 1-2 ft. wide at maturity.
The leaves and underground parts of begonias contain toxic calcium oxalates so they are poisonous to pets. Deer are generally selective herbivores, but they may eat begonias when food is scarce.
