Shillings or Ilex vomitoria 'Taylor Rudolph' is a native to Tennessee and is dense, fine, twiggy growth makes up a plant that may reach 3' to 5' both tall and wide maturity. Taylor's Rudolph is the female so in the fall and winter, the birds enjoy the berries. Being a female variety, it requires a male selection of the same species growing nearby in order to set fruit such as, which because of its heavy flowering characteristics makes this a great pollinator for female (Shillings). The leaves of Yaupon Hollies have one of the highest caffeine contents of any known plant. After the Boston tea party when the British cut off the colonists source of tea during and after the Revolution, many Americans got their caffeine "fixes" from tea made from the leaves of this plant. The Indians referred to it as the "black drink" and it was used by them as a ceremonial drink.

Care

Yaupon Hollies prefers well-drained, acidic soil and is highly tolerant of drought after established. It reaches 3–5 ft. tall and wide, requires minimal pruning. Shade to sun in almost any soil. Best grown in zones 7-9.

Growth Habit

It typically grows 3-5 feet both tall and wide. It is characterized by small, glossy, dark green leaves, purple-toned new stems, and a lack of berries, as it is a male.

Toxicity

While not typically fatal, the berries and leaves contain saponins that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and lethargy if ingested by dogs or cats.Highly deer resistant.
