Beautiful Wood Fern

$9.99

This is a Himalayan native evergreen fern that can be found growing in moist valleys at five to seven thousand feet elevation in Tibet. Dryopteris pulcherrima, commonly known as the Beautiful Wood Fern, is, as the name suggests, a beautiful fern.

Care

This fern thrives in partial to full shade, making it an excellent choice for shaded or woodland gardens. It prefers moist, well-draining soil that remains consistently damp but not waterlogged. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil moist and maintain the fern's lush appearance. Applying a layer of mulch around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and regulates temperature. This fern is generally low-maintenance, requiring little pruning. Removing any damaged or dead fronds helps keep the plant tidy and encourages new growth.

Growth Habit

Zones 5 to 9. What's surprising is how well it has grown in the heat in southern US gardens as far south as zone 9a, and is cold hardy to zone 5a. Its lacy, upright fronds form an 18 inch tall by 2 foot wide evergreen clump that is excellent as an accent or in groupings in partially shaded to shady woodland gardens.

Toxicity

Non-toxic to humans and pets.
