A dramatic focal point of early summer gardens, biennial clary sage has large quilted leaves, and tall, multi-branched spikes of pink flowers encased in showy, long-lasting violet bracts. A scent of grapefruit and pine rises from the bruised leaves and flowers. The seeds have been used medicinally to reduce inflammation of the eye, and the fragrant leaves are edible and used as flavoring in food, beer, wine and oils. The flowers are fragrant, showy white-lavender blooms that appear from June to August.
Plant in average, well-drained soils in full sun, and does well in light, gravelly, dry or sandy soils. Wet soil in winter should be avoided. It is drought-tolerant. Rich, excessively fertilized soils produce tall plants with few flowers. Best grown in zones 5-9.
Reaches 4-5' H x 2.5' W at maturity. Blooms pale purple with rose or purple bracts from spring to summer.
Clary sage is resistant to browsing by deer and rabbits and quite drought tolerant. The ASPCA has given it a thumbs-up, confirming its non-toxic status for dogs.
