Description

Rockfoil is a little known early season blooming perennial that is a good choice for the partially shaded rock garden, wall garden or screen. It's nice to have pretty color early in the spring before other plants begin to come back to life for the season. Scenic Red Rockfoil or saxifraga x arendsii 'Marto Red' It forms a low cushion or mound of bright green leaves, bearing short stems of upfacing, cup-shaped red flowers in spring.

Care

Requires a cool, moist location. Dislikes drought and hot humid summer weather. Most do best in gritty, well-drained soil and in sun or partial shade. Trim lightly after blooming to remove the flower stems. A light top-dressing of sand right after flowering will help to keep the clumps tight and free from root-rot. Best grown in zones 4-8.

Growth Habit

Rockfoil forms dense, moss-like cushions of dark green foliage, that produces small but eye catching petaled red flowers on slender stalks from early to mid-spring. A shorter addition to the garden, it can reach a maximum height of 4-6 inches and can spread up to 5-7 inches.

Toxicity

This deer and rabbit resistant perennial likes to be planted in full sun (only some hot afternoon sun) to part shade gardens. Scenic Red Rockfoil  is generally considered non-toxic to pets, including cats and dogs.
