In the aster (Asteraceae) family, the Tennessee Purple Coneflower has deep purple flowers and is obviously (by the name) native to Tennessee! Studies suggest that purple coneflower has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Easy to grow and universally as adaptable as "purpea" Echinacea. The wild distribution of Echinacea tennesseensis is extremely limited, and although the remaining stands are protected (listed federally as an endangered species) it is of paramount importance that gardeners throughout the US participate in the preservation of this unique species.
Nearly all species of Echinacea serve as potential host plants for the larvae of the Silvery Checkerspot butterfly and several moths including the Wavy-lined Emerald and the Sunflower Moth. Aside from a myriad of pollinating insects, the nectar-rich flowers of coneflowers are also very attractive to ruby-throated hummingbirds. Once flowers have faded, and seeds have ripened, songbirds such as American goldfinches forage the spent heads and eat the seed.
Purple Coneflowers thrive in well-drained soil and prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade. They're adaptable to various soil types and are relatively drought-tolerant once established.Hardy to zones 5 to 9.
These plants typically grow to heights of about 2 to 5 feet, featuring sturdy stems and producing several flowers. Purple Coneflowers bloom from early to late summer, showcasing their captivating flowers.
Generally considered safe for dogs and cats. Deer & rabbit resistant.
