block.Eclipse® Hydrangea, the first true dark-leaf reblooming mophead hydrangea, offers season-long beauty with intense, dark purple leaves that hold their color, even in warm climates. The striking foliage, paired with gorgeous amethyst or cranberry-colored blooms, will pair perfectly with anything in the garden and are sure to make a dramatic impact. Eclipse has unusually bright red-and-pink florets with creamy white centers. (The blossoms may be more purplish depending on soil conditions.)
This heavy bloomer sets abundant flower buds in fall, so we discourage cutting it back anytime after mid-June or pruning later in the season. This showstopping shrub maintains its good looks thanks to resistance to common Hydrangea diseases, including powdery mildew and Cercospora leaf spot. Best grown in zones 5-9.
Maturing at 3-5 feet tall and wide, Eclipse® will stand out, whether used as a focal point in the garden or in decorative containers.
Chewing hydrangeas causes cyanide to be released. The leaves, buds, flowers, and bark all contain the toxin, so if your dog munches any part of your hydrangeas, he could get sick. Unfortunately, deer love to graze on the leaves, flowers, and tender tips of hydrangeas.
