Magic Berry Coralberry

$44.99

With Proud Berry® Coralberry (Symphoricarpos sp. 'Sophie' PP21226) the berries just are spectacular. Spring starts with pink blossoms that gradually fade to white. Coralberry then grows beautifully arching blue-green stems and foliage all three growing seasons and adds garden interest all year. But, come fall when the pretty pink flowers have busted out into scads of almost fluorescent pink berries. Proud Berry® Coralberry peaks when other plants in your garden are winding down for the year. These berries fill that quiet transition time from summer to fall. Native to North America.

Care

The Magic Berry Coralberry is able to grow in all light levels, from full sun to full shade, although berry crops will be reduced in heavy shade. It grows in all kinds of soils too, from acid to alkaline and from poor, dry and rocky soil into wet and poorly-drained soils. It is generally free of pest or disease problems and can be trimmed or not, as you need.

Growth Habit

Magic Berry Coralberry is an amazingly adaptable North American native deciduous flowering shrub anyone in USDA Zones 3 to 8 can easily grow and enjoy. At 4 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, this dwarf cultivar is excellent for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural hedge. In early summer an abundance of small, bell-shaped, pink flowers appear.

 Toxicity
The Poisonous Plants of North Carolina database says that the berries of all species of Symphoricarpos are mildly toxic when eaten. It isn't eaten by deer, and you can basically plant it and forget it, after some extra watering while it becomes established. It can be trimmed into a hedge – a hard trim in early spring will mean you still get berries, but trimming in summer will reduce them.
