Sweet olive (Osmanthus fragrans) is a large upright evergreen shrub (often referred to as a "tree") is native to many parts of Asia and belonging to the Olive family (Oleaceae). Individually the blossoms are small and inconspicuous, but the apricot fragrance is powerful and exquisite. Here in Chattanooga, we are considered zone 8 (recently changed from 7 to 8 by TN Dept of Agriculture). Sweet Olives can be grown in Zone 7, but can be damaged by unusually cold winter weather.
Plant tea olives in well drained soil in an area that is full sun (for best results). Water them regularly while being established after which it's drought-tolerant; it's low-maintenance, responds well to pruning for shaping, and is ideal for hedges or specimen trees in USDA Zones 8-11, prized for its apricot scented flowers. Here in Chattanooga, we are considered zone 8 (recently changed from 7 to 8 by TN Dept of Agriculture). Sweet Olives can be grown in Zone 7, but can be damaged by unusually cold winter weather.
This plant is rather slow growing and is usually quite long lived. At maturity, it can range from 10-15' tall and 10-15'. Its opposite leave arrangement are a dark, shiny green and the edges may be finely toothed or smooth with both types present on the same individual. In autumn, winter and early spring white flowers cover the shrub. It blooms intermittently throughout the summer.
Generally considered non-toxic to pets. Its leathery, aromatic leaves generally do not attract deer, allowing it to thrive without significant browsing.
