Product page > Variant picker block.Leucothoe axillaris, commonly known as Coastal Leucothoe or Doghobble, is an elegant, evergreen shrub admired for its graceful arching branches, glossy foliage, and seasonal color. Native to the southeastern United States, this plant naturally thrives in woodland settings and shaded garden areas, providing lush texture and year-round interest. Its leathery, lance-shaped leaves emerge bronze in spring, mature to a rich dark green in summer, and take on deep red and purple tones in fall and winter. In late spring, drooping clusters of small, fragrant, white, urn-shaped flowers appear along the stems, adding delicate beauty and attracting pollinators.
Perfect for shaded borders, naturalized woodland gardens, or foundation plantings, Leucothoe axillaris brings graceful form and consistent color to areas where few other evergreens perform as well.
Leucothoe axillaris grows best in partial to full shade and prefers moist, acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It performs especially well in woodland or naturalized settings and should be protected from harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage. Regular watering helps keep the soil evenly moist—especially in warmer months—but avoid waterlogged conditions. Mulching is beneficial to maintain root moisture and regulate soil temperature. Once established, the shrub is moderately drought-tolerant and requires little pruning beyond the removal of dead or damaged branches.
This compact, arching evergreen typically grows 2 to 4 feet tall and spreads 3 to 6 feet wide. Its layered, fountain-like form creates a soft, natural look in shaded landscapes. Over time, it forms dense colonies that can be used as a low informal hedge or groundcover under trees and taller shrubs.
While not known to be highly toxic, all parts of Leucothoe axillaris contain grayanotoxins, which may cause mild toxicity if ingested by humans or pets. Despite this, the plant is generally resistant to browsing by deer, making it a dependable and low-maintenance option for shaded gardens and natural landscapes.
