DESCRIPTION

Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Blueray’, commonly known as Blueray Blueberry, is a reliable, mid-season variety valued for its large, sweet, and flavorful berries. This northern highbush cultivar produces heavy crops of firm, powder-blue fruit that ripen in midsummer, typically around July, making it an excellent choice for home gardens and small orchards. The berries are known for their balanced sweetness and mild tartness, ideal for eating fresh, baking, or freezing. Its productivity, consistent flavor, and ornamental appeal have made ‘Blue Ray’ a favorite among growers and gardeners alike.

In addition to its fruit, ‘Blue Ray’ offers year-round landscape interest. Clusters of small, bell-shaped white flowers appear in spring, followed by the signature blue berries of summer. By fall, the foliage turns brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow, and its reddish winter stems add subtle color to the cold-season garden.

Care

‘Blue Ray’ thrives in full sun and requires acidic, moist, well-drained soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. Regular watering is important, especially during fruit development, but avoid standing water or soggy soil. Mulch generously with pine bark, needles, or sawdust to help maintain acidity and retain soil moisture. Blueberries are shallow-rooted and benefit from consistent soil moisture and protection from drought. Prune annually in late winter to remove weak or dead wood and to encourage strong new growth. A light application of fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in spring can promote healthy growth and abundant fruit.

Growth Habit

This deciduous shrub typically grows 4 to 6 feet tall and wide with an upright, rounded habit. ‘Blue Ray’ is self-fertile but produces higher yields and larger berries when planted near another northern highbush variety such as ‘Bluecrop’ or ‘Jersey’ for cross-pollination. It performs best in USDA Zones 4 to 7 and provides both ornamental beauty and abundant harvests season after season.

Toxicity

Blueberries, including ‘Blue Ray’, are non-toxic and safe for humans and pets. They are also attractive to pollinators such as bees and beneficial insects, making them an excellent addition to edible and wildlife-friendly gardens.
