Description

English lavender or Lavandula angustifolia is an evergreen perennial shrub. Despite its common name, it is not in fact native to England, but comes primarily from the Mediterranean region. It was reportedly named English lavender because of its ability to grow well in the English climate. This plant is the source of the true oil of lavender. The flowers can be dried and used in potpourri as well.

This plant can be used as a border or low hedge and in mass plantings, or containers. A versatile companion, it is well suited for a wide variety of gardens, including butterfly, pollinator, children's, cutting, edible, herb, and rock gardens. It is also appreciated in a garden for the blind.

Care

This plant requires perfectly drained soil, preferably on the dry side, and full sun. English lavender does not like wet feet and will die out in heavy clays. Cut it back yearly and remove the spent flower spikes after the flowers fade.

Growth Habit

It's a dwarf shrub that is broadly mounded, English lavender grows up to 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide. It blooms in the summer and has aromatic leaves, flowers, and dry seed heads.

Toxicity

Lavender contains a small amount of linalool, which is toxic to dogs and cats. Mild exposure to lavender is not generally harmful and may help with anxiety, depression, and stress. Lavender poisoning is possible and may cause vomiting, reduced appetite, and other symptoms. This plant is deer resistant.
