block.Verbascum thapsus was brought over from Europe by settlers where it was used as a medicinal herb, as a remedy for coughs and diarrhea and a respiratory stimulant for the lungs when smoked. A methanol extract from common mullein has been used as an insecticide for mosquito larvae.
Use well draining, poor to average soil that's slightly alkaline. Plant mullein in full sun. Space taller types 3 feet apart, shorter varieties 1 foot apart. Keep soil moist when growing from seed or when flowering, otherwise, mullein is drought tolerant.
Once mature, this plant typically reaches up from 2-7 feet tall and can be up to 2.5 wide. A drought-tolerant variety, mullein produces bright yellow blooms with five-petaled flowers grouped closely on a leafy spike. Blooms May–September.
Plant size and shape may differ from what is pictured.
