Description

Cream Wild Indigo (Baptisia Leuophaea) often called False Indigo is native to Tennessee but it is an exceptionally rare plant in the state and is officially designated as a plant of "Special Concern". The flowers bloom in the early spring and occur along long racemes. Unlike other wild indigo species, like white wild indigo, the flowering stems droop over and the hang to the ground. The individual flowers are on short pedicels to face upward toward the sun.

Care

Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Best in full sun. Tolerates drought and poor soils. This plant is effective in the landscape when used for borders, cottage gardens, prairies, meadows and native plant gardens. Can also be effective in naturalized settings. It looks best as a specimen or in small groups in gardens. Best grown in zones 3-9.

Growth Habit

It grows up to 3 feet tall and just as wide. Its striking vertical form and ability to serve as a focal point when blooming each spring can make this plant a garden star. In Tennessee, its spiky blooms usually last 3 to 4 weeks during April.

Toxicity

Generally considered safe for pets, but it can be considered midly toxic. The plant contains a milky sap that can cause skin irritation upon contact and mild gastrointestinal issues (vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss) if eaten in large quantities. Highly regarded as deer resistant.
