Description

Crimson Beauty Red Creeping Phlox (Phlox drummondii) is a carefree wonder that quickly blankets even tough problem areas with dense green foliage and thousands of colorful blooms. Outstanding as a hardy ground cover or as a low-growing accent to taller perennials. Plant at the front of a sunny border for a touch of brilliant color and soft texture.

Care

Drummond is drought tolerant for brief periods of time but extreme drought will cause flower production to fall off. The flowers are self-cleaning and petals fall off naturally, leaving the calyx which becomes the seed pods. Phlox plants thrive even in low-nutrient soil and do not need fertilization. They also need no pinching to naturally form dense little bushy plants full of vibrant flowers. In fact, annual phlox is a no-fuss plant that will scent the garden, attract butterflies and bees and their fruits are attractive to some birds as food.

Growth Habit

At maturity, this plant reaches 8-10 inches both tall and wide. Blooms from early summer until early fall. Hardy in zones 3-10.

Toxicity

Phlox is a non-toxic plant and a safe garden plant for people with children and pets. It is not toxic to farm animals or wildlife either. If your child or pet ingests phlox, they are not likely to have any ill effects. Phlox is not a preferred plant for deer to eat. Deer tend not to be attracted to scented plants.
