Description

Hibiscus ‘Dark Mystery’ boasts near‑black, wine-purple leaves that form a rich, rounded backdrop for exceptionally large flowers, each measuring 8-9″ across. Beginning in mid‑summer and continuing into early fall, pure white petals unfurl to reveal a deep cherry-red eye and dusky pink veining, creating bold contrast that turns heads in any garden setting

Care

‘Dark Mystery’ excels in full sun to part shade and demands moist, well‑drained soil to thrive. Regular watering supports its rapid summer growth and abundant bloom production. As temperatures rise, the robust stems carry flower after flower, forming a spectacular display. While hardy in Zones 4-9, it benefits from a thick layer of mulch in winter and pruning in spring to tidy up last season’s stems.

Growth Habit

This rose mallow reaches approximately 5 to 5½ feet tall with a similar spread. Its vigorous, clump-forming growth and fast daily shoot extension make it ideal as a focal point in cottage-style gardens, rain gardens, or mixed borders. Flowers appear all along the stems, creating a cascade of blooms from top to bottom

Toxicity

While not typically toxic to pets or humans, ingestion of any plant material may cause mild symptoms; keep curious animals away from foliage and blooms. Deer and rabbits generally avoid Hibiscus ‘Dark Mystery’, making it a reliable, low-maintenance option for ornamental gardens.
