Dwarf Alberta Spruce

$29.99

The Dwarf Alberta Spruce is seen often in landscapes here in our region. Its a classic conifer "Christmas" tree looking plant. Although considered a spruce "tree", we usually refer to it as a shrub. This dwarf version grows very slowly (2 inches per year). Alberta has a tight, densely-packed evergreen growth habit that almost looks fuzzy. We just love the new lighter color growth that occurs in early spring right after the winter. This plant is a great container plant also.  It is commonly kept in containers as a young shrub and adorned with Christmas tree ornaments and holiday ribbons during the winter months.

Growth Habit

A perfect cone-shaped dwarf conifer displaying dense green needles. Excellent as a miniature Christmas tree in natural form, or as an artistically pruned topiary. Makes a formal statement in the garden. A superb container specimen.

Care

Alberta does better in cooler temperatures; zone 7 can bring it some issues so we use Fertilome Azalea/Evergreen Fertilizer with Systemic each spring to help ensure strong growth and help with spider mites. Alberta grows best in full sun and well-drained soil. It will tolerate some light shade but performs best in a spot with good air circulation; its dense foliage can trap moisture which can cause problems. Water Alberta when the top 2 inches of soil is dry. These plants do not like soggy soil, so beware of over watering.

Toxicity

For pets, The Spruce Pets states that spruce trees and their relatives are non-toxic to household pets. Although consuming large amounts needles from the tree can give your animal companion an upset stomach or cause oral irritation, they are not deadly; therefore, they are safe to bring to a household with pets. Oh and deer do not like to snack on them!
