Native to eastern and central North America, PowWow is breathtaking, fade-proof, rosy purple flowers from early summer right into fall, without dead-heading! This award-winning bloomer stays compact and tidy in the landscape and adds fantastic color to mixed containers. Highly adaptable; tolerates poor soil, heat, humidity, and even drought, once established. An herbaceous perennial in zones 3-8.
Nearly all species of Echinacea serve as potential host plants for the larvae of the Silvery Checkerspot butterfly and several moths including the Wavy-lined Emerald and the Sunflower Moth. Aside from a myriad of pollinating insects, the nectar-rich flowers of coneflowers are also very attractive to ruby-throated hummingbirds. Once flowers have faded, and seeds have ripened, songbirds such as American goldfinches forage the spent heads and eat the seed.
White: Pure white flowers with a golden yellow cone measured 3-4” across with wide, overlapping, reflexed petals. From early through late summer, the flowers are produced prolifically on stiff, well-branched stems. More branches result in more flowers per plant and a showier display in the landscape.
Wild Berry: Each stocky, relatively short plant carried a bouquet of fragrant, 3-4”, deep purple-pink to near-magenta flowers on stiff, branched stems. More branches result in more flowers per plant and a showier display in the landscape. We noted that the older flowers were nearly the same magenta color as the new flowers; the flowers held their bright coloration very well as they aged.
