Evergreen Wisteria

$19.99

vergreen wisteria (Millettia reticulata) is not only a beautiful and fragrant vine, it’s also an excellent alternative to the more commonly seen Chinese wisteria, which is an exotic invasive plant. While it is a non-native plant, it is not known for its aggressive growth or ability to outcompete native species, unlike Chinese and Japanese wisteria. Neither is it truly a wisteria, although both plants are part of the legume (pea) family. Keep in mind that this plant can be a little iffy here in our zone 7 (Chattanooga) if we have a harsh winter.

Care

Evergreen wisteria vines will adapt to most soil pHs and can grow in any soil type, so long as it is well drained. Deadheading (removing spent flowers) can encourage your vine to keep blooming. Evergreen wisteria thrives in USDA plant hardiness zones 8 to 10 and will grow best in areas with full sun, but will tolerate partial shade.

Growth Habits

Evergreen wisteria can reach heights of 30 feet but can be kept shorter with pruning. It blooms in the summer (and sometimes into the fall) with a flush of deep mauve, pea-shaped blooms that resemble wisteria. The pleasantly scented flowers are described by some as having a cedar or camphor aroma. Best grown in zones 8-10.

Toxicity
While there are many plants that can be mildly toxic to dogs and other pets, the seeds and pods of Wisteria can be extremely toxic to dogs when consumed. Not all dogs will eat the pods but I wouldn't suggest taking any chances. Deer resistant.
