We love Autumn Ferns here in Tennessee. They are sometimes called 'Brilliance Autumn Fern' which refers to the lustrous orange color of the newly emerging fronds which seem to glow against the backdrop of the shiny, dark green, mature fronds. This perennial shade fern is particularly nice when grown in woodland or Japanese gardens. In mild areas or with suitable protection, the Autumn Fern is evergreen. At maturity, this fern gets around 18" both tall and wide.
The Brilliance Autumn Fern thrives in partial to full shade, making it an excellent choice for shaded or woodland gardens. It prefers moist, well-draining soil that remains consistently damp but not waterlogged. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil moist and maintain the fern's lush appearance. Applying a layer of mulch around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and regulates temperature. This fern is generally low-maintenance, requiring little pruning. Removing any damaged or dead fronds helps keep the plant tidy and encourages new growth.
Zones 5 to 9. 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) tall and wide. Its fronds grow in a clumping, arching form, adding a graceful texture to the garden. As new fronds emerge in spring, they exhibit their coppery-orange brilliance, which eventually matures to glossy green. This fern's evergreen nature ensures year-round appeal, providing interest in the garden even during winter.
Non-toxic to humans and pets.
