Description

Godzilla Japanese painted ferns or niponicum pictum 'godzilla' shows off painted fern fronds of epic proportions and has arching, silvery green fronds with deep purple midribs that radiate outward from a supersized spreading clump. The massive form and dramatic foliage is sure to thrill in a shaded bed or woodland setting, partnered with larger hosta plants.

Care

Well drained rich soil; shade to partial sun and moist but not soggy. Clip off dead and damaged fronds in the spring. Rarely requires division, but if desired can be divided in spring or fall once large enough to have two or more crowns.  An herbaceous perennial in zones 5-8.

Growth Habit

In the spring intensely colored fronds emerge a deep reddish-purple and slowly fade into a minty silver green with red stems.   Then, in autumn the cooler weather entices a reddish blush to the fronds before dying back in the winter. Grows 3 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide.

Toxicity

Not considered toxic to pets. Deer & rabbit resistant.
