Description

Aucuba japonica 'Hosoba Hoshifu'also known as Japanese Laurel, is an attractive evergreen shrub prized for its glossy, leathery leaves boldly splashed with golden-yellow spots. This shade-loving plant brings brightness and texture to the darkest corners of the garden, adding a lush, tropical look year-round. In spring, small clusters of deep purple flowers appear, adding a subtle accent to the foliage, followed by bright red berries on female plants when a male variety is nearby for pollination.

Care

Aucuba thrives in partial to full shade, where its leaves maintain their best color and avoid sun scorch. It grows well in moist, fertile, well-drained soil and tolerates a wide range of conditions, including dry shade once established. Though it prefers consistently moist soil, it should not be waterlogged. Pruning may be done in early spring to shape the plant or remove damaged branches. Best grown in zones 6-10.

Growth Habit

Aucuba is a slow-growing evergreen that typically reaches 6 to 10 feet tall and 5 to 9 feet wide, forming a dense, rounded shrub.

Toxicity

All parts of Aucuba japonica are considered toxic if ingested and may cause stomach irritation. However, it is not a favorite of deer or rabbits, making it a dependable, low-maintenance option for shaded gardens.
