Description

Bowles Golden or Carex elata 'Aurea' is a taller sedge grass with slender blades. This moisture-loving grass gently sway with a summer breeze as it catches its arching, vase-shaped foliage. Bright yellow-green foliage, thinly margined in green, brightens a shady spot. Stunning around or in the shallow water of a pond or stream. Adapts to most any site with sufficient moisture. Semi-evergreen.

Care

Excellent for adding a "thriller" or "filler" effect in containers or as a groundcover along water features. Requires consistently wet to moist soil. It can even grow in 2-3 inches of standing water. Prefers full sun for maximum yellow color, but tolerates partial shade. Best grown in zones 5-9.

Growth Habit

At maturity, reaches 2-3' tall and wide. Cut back old foliage in early spring to 3-4 inches to encourage fresh new growth. The brightest gold color appears in full sun. In too much shade, it may flop or turn more green.

Toxicity

Considered generally safe for cats and dogs. This ornamental grass is non-toxic, pet-friendly, and a safe addition to gardens. While generally harmless, ingesting any plant material can cause mild, temporary gastrointestinal upset in pets. Resistant to deer & rabbits.
