Description
Hearts of Fire or Cercis canadensis 'JN100' is native to Tennessee and is known for its vibrant, multi-colored spring and summer foliage, making it a Tennessee-friendly ornamental choice. In spring it bounds with a fiery eruption of dark pink blooms. Flowers are visited by hummingbirds, butterflies, honey bees, and many species of native bees. The seeds are eaten by finches, juncos, nuthatches, cardinals, and rose-breasted grosbeaks.

Care

Redbud need full sun to partial shade in moderately fertile well-drained moist soils. It is pH adaptable and deer resistant but doesn't tolerate wet soils. Keep the soil evenly moist the first year and water during periods of drought thereafter. Be sure to choose your site carefully as redbud do not transplant well due to a deep tap root. Best grown in zones 5-9.

Growing Habit

This redbud thrives in full sun and will grow moderately until it reaches a height and width of 10 to 15 feet. Clusters of bright flowers attract pollinators and provide a spectacular display for any yard or garden. The blossoms give way to a blaze of heart-shaped foliage ignited in shades of burgundy, gold, and tangerine.

Toxicity

Deer & rabbit resistant. Not considered toxic to pets.
