A sport of 'Guacamole' Hosta, Stained Glass has huge, 10½" long, brilliant gold leaves with wide, dark green margins. Variegation appears early in the season and prominent veins throughout give it the look of "stained glass". Large, fragrant, pale lavender flowers appear on 30" scapes in late summer. Exhibits greater sun tolerance.
Hosta thrives in partial to full shade, making it an excellent choice for shaded gardens or as an understory plant. It prefers well-draining soil with regular moisture, but it can tolerate some dryness once established. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and keeps the roots cool. This hosta variety requires minimal pruning, with the focus on removing any damaged or faded leaves to maintain its attractive appearance.
Hosta is a hardy perennial for USDA zones 3 to 9. It typically reaches a height of about 15 to 16 inches with a spread of 48 inches. Its clumping, mounded form creates a neat and compact habit, making it suitable for borders, edging, or container planting. In summer, the plant may produce lavender flowers on tall spikes, adding an extra touch of charm to its appearance.
Toxic to pets. Stained Glass hosta is considered somewhat deer resistant compared to other hosta varieties, often described as having thicker leaves that are less appealing to pests, though no hosta is entirely deer-proof.
