Description

A bold burst of native beauty, Jackpot Native Flame Azalea or Rhododendron austrinum 'Jackpot' is a deciduous shrub prized for its brilliant, fragrant blooms that appear in mid to late spring. Clusters of honeysuckle-shaped flowers emerge in shades of golden-yellow and fiery orange, delivering a striking display just as the garden awakens for the season. The floral display is not only eye-catching, but also a magnet for hummingbirds, butterflies, and native bees. With lush green summer foliage that turns bronzy-orange in fall, Jackpot provides multi-season interest and natural charm.

Native azaleas attract many pollinators including hummingbirds and bumblebees. Showy swallowtail butterflies are important pollinators, and they host at least 50 species of native moths and butterflies, including Hairstreaks and Brown Elfins.

Care

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil in part sun to dappled shade. Jackpot thrives best in woodland settings where roots remain cool and consistently moist. Avoid planting in heavy, poorly drained soils. It is hardy in zones 6–9 and can tolerate heat and humidity with proper care. Water regularly during dry spells, and mulch annually to protect the shallow root system and retain soil moisture.

Growth Habit

Reaches 6–8 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide at maturity. Blooms in rich shades of yellow, orange, and gold from mid to late spring. Its foliage is deciduous, turning a warm bronze in fall.

Toxicity

Jackpot Native Azalea is not pet-safe; all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested by pets or livestock. However, it is typically resistant to deer and rabbits, making it a reliable choice for naturalized areas or unfenced gardens. Its early-season flowers make it an essential component of any native pollinator landscape.
