DESCRIPTION

Carya illinoinensis ‘Jackson’, commonly known as the Jackson Pecan, is a high-quality southern pecan variety prized for its large nuts, excellent flavor, and consistent yields. Originating from Mississippi, this cultivar is a reliable producer in warm climates and is valued for both home orchards and commercial plantings. The Jackson Pecan tree produces medium to large nuts with thin shells that are easy to crack and have a rich, buttery taste, making them ideal for fresh eating, baking, or roasting. Nuts typically mature in mid to late season, offering a dependable harvest window and good kernel quality year after year.

Beyond its productivity, the Jackson Pecan is a stately shade tree with graceful, spreading branches and attractive dark green foliage that turns golden yellow in fall. Its combination of ornamental value and edible yield makes it a standout in southern landscapes.

Care

Jackson Pecan grows best in full sun and requires deep, fertile, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.0 to 7.0). Consistent watering is important during the establishment period and in dry seasons, as pecans need steady soil moisture for good nut development. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weed competition.
Like most pecans, Jackson benefits from cross-pollination for optimal yields. It is a Type II (protogynous) pollinator, meaning its female flowers become receptive before the male flowers release pollen. For best production, plant it near a Type I (protandrous) variety such as ‘Pawnee’ or ‘Desirable’ to ensure excellent nut set. Fertilize annually in early spring with a balanced formula designed for nut trees to promote steady growth and improved nut production.

Growth Habit

The Jackson Pecan is a vigorous, medium to large deciduous tree that can reach 60 to 80 feet tall at maturity with a broad, spreading canopy. It grows quickly in warm, humid regions and can begin producing nuts within 5 to 8 years after planting. Hardy in USDA Zones 6 to 9, this tree thrives in the southern United States and lower Midwest where long, hot summers provide ideal nut-ripening conditions.

Toxicity

Pecans, including the Jackson variety, are non-toxic to humans and are safe and nutritious to eat. However, raw nuts should be kept away from pets, as large quantities can cause digestive upset. The tree is also an important food source for wildlife such as birds and squirrels, contributing ecological value to orchards and large landscapes.
