Description

Rhododendron 'Mandarin Lights' Performs equally well in full sun or partial shade, and is a deciduous azalea lights up your garden with vivid blooms in early spring before the leaves have emerged. The eye-catching effect of its early flowers is especially effective when planted at the edge of a woodland border, so that it's color lights up a darker area. Once established, it'll display its seemingly magical color show without fail. Bred at the University of Minnesota for particular cold hardiness and compact habit.

Care

Mandarin is very easy to grow in moist but well-drained, humus rich soil and dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. Once established it is quite drought tolerant, requiring supplemental water only during prolonged periods of dry summer weather. This azaleas is very low-maintenance, requiring little if any pruning.

Growth Habit

Deciduous. With an upright rounded irregular form from 4-5' tall and wide. The pistil and red stamens extend about 1 inch beyond the mouth in a graceful upward curve. The flowers produce a delightful honeysuckle-like fragrance that is enjoyed by butterflies, hummingbirds and humans alike. Very lustrous dark green leaves turn orange-bronze in fall. The handsome leaves are exceptionally mildew free.

Toxicity

Azalea's are toxic to pets. Chewing into this plant will release these crystals causing tissue penetration & irritation to the mouth & oral cavity. Unfortunately not deer resistant.
