Paw Paw Tree

Pairs well with

Description

Paw Paw trees or Asimina triloba are hardy, native, low-maintenance fruit trees produce creamy, tropical-flavored fruit with notes of banana, mango, and vanilla. With their large, lush foliage and unique, custard-like fruit, they add both beauty and productivity to any space. Paw Paw trees are especially valuable to pollinators, and exist as the only host plant of one of our most beautiful butterflies, the Zebra Swallowtail.

Care

The Paw Paw Tree prefers partial shade to full sun, making it perfect for areas with filtered sunlight or light forested environments. Prefers rich, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH (5.5-6.5), and benefits from high organic matter for optimal growth and fruit production. Does best in consistently watered, moist soil but not soggy. Best grown on zones 5-10.

Growth Habit

The fruit ripens in late summer to early fall, typically from August to September, providing an abundant harvest of tropical-flavored fruit. The Paw Paw Tree typically grows to a height of 15-20 feet.

Toxicity

For people, the fruit is non-toxic, but can cause gastrointestinal issues if eaten too much, especially if seeds are eaten. Oddly enough however, parts of the pawpaw tree (fruit skin, unripe fruit, leaves, seeds & roots) are all toxic to pets and people. Though ripe pulp is generally safe in moderation we'd recommend keeping all parts away from dogs and cats to be safe.
