Black Gold Philodendron or Philodendron melanochrysum is a spectacular vining philodendron that when mature produces 2’ long leaves of iridescent black-green with pale green veins. The juvenile leaves emerge with bronze tones.
While Philodendron will survive lighting conditions from low to high, it wants high indirect light to truly thrive. If you want to water it the traditional way, it’s best to let the top couple of inches of the potting mix dry before watering again. A native of the tropical Americas, its juvenile form creeps along the jungle floor and has small 2-4” round leaves. Once it begins to climb a tree or other vertical object, the leaves increase in size. Because it’s a vining plant, you may need to prune your Philodendron if it reaches the top of your support. Otherwise, it does not require pruning. But you can also prune it anytime you wish by cutting off the top of the new growth.
Though a moss pole isn't required for healthy growth, Black Gold is a great climber, and the extra support can help it reach its maximum height. This is a beautiful, low-growing shrub or vine that grows in clusters around two feet tall and between two to three feet wide. This philodendron needs 4-5’ of vertical growing space to develop into its mature form.
Toxic to both dogs and cats. It contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause immediate mouth irritation, pain, swelling, drooling, and vomiting if ingested. It is highly recommended to keep this plant out of reach.
