A type of Copper Beech tree, the European Beech 'Riversii' is a majestic specimen has a dense, broad crown and glossy, purple leaves that emerge deep purple in spring and fade to purple green in summer. When autumn approaches, the foliage turns a nice copper bronze. It has the deepest purple foliage of any purple-leafed beech. Its smooth, pale gray bark just adds to its interest, especially in winter.
Best grown in zones 4-7. The River's Purple Beech thrives in full to part sun in average, well-drained soils. It will not tolerate wet, poorly drained soils.
Also known as European beech or purple beech Fagus sylvatica riversii is a large, deciduous shade tree that reaches mature size of 50-60' tall and 40-50' wide with smooth, gray bark. The blooms are somewhat inconspicuous yellow-green blooms appearing as drooping male clusters and short female spikes, but its main show is its deep purple foliage.
Considered deer resistant as deer tend to avoid its foliage, finding other plants tastier, especially as it matures and develops tougher leaves. The seeds (beechnuts) and, to a lesser extent, the leaves contain tannins and saponins so it is considered toxic to pets.
