The Ruby Falls Redbud is a dwarf cascading/weeping beautiful purple tree. With maroon to deep green to purple leaves from spring to fall and lavender spring blooms that sit atop bold red stems, you will have an excellent specimen tree. At a mere 6-8 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide at maturity this compact tree fits just about anywhere and can even be grown in containers!
Host plant for 24 species of Lepidoptera, including the white flannel moth, Henry’s elfin butterfly, Redbud Leaffolder, Promiscuous Angle, and Cenopis chambersana. Flowers are visited by hummingbirds, butterflies, honey bees, and many other species of bees. The seeds are eaten by finches, juncos, nuthatches, cardinals, and rose-breasted grosbeaks.
Redbud need full sun to partial shade in moderately fertile well-drained moist soils. It is pH adaptable and deer resistant but doesn't tolerate wet soils. Keep the soil evenly moist the first year and water during periods of drought thereafter. Be sure to choose your site carefully as redbuds do not transplant well due to a deep tap root. Best grown in zones 5-9.
Redbuds always remain small, maturing at 6-10 feet high and 5-6 feet wide. They generally grow as a small tree with a divided trunk close to the ground. The spreading crown is usually rounded to flat-topped. It can develop as a multi-trunk shrub. Redbuds growing in the sun will be compact and rounded; when grown in shade, their form is loose, open and tall.
Deer & rabbit resistant. Since the leaves are poisonous, it would be advisable to keep pets away from red maple trees.
