Mertensia virginica (Virginia Bluebells) is a favorite woodland wildflower blooming March - June. This truly breathtaking wildflower produces loose clusters of trumpet-shaped pink flower buds that turn blue when the flower is fully opened. The oval-shaped leaves are alternately located around a thin, smooth single stem that begins curled in shape and extends as it grows into an elegant arch with a showy blossom cluster. Native to Eastern US.

Care
Virginia Bluebells grow well in any garden soil but prefers moist rich soils. . This woodlander looks attractive planted next to ferns and hostas. All of our woodland plants grow naturally on rich, moist forest floors and are perfectly suited for your garden. Add them to an existing wooded area or create your own woodland garden. Dappled shade and humus-rich soil provide perfect growing conditions. Hardy in zones 3-8.

Growth Habit

Another spring ephemeral, by the end of June the plants are completely dormant. If left undisturbed, this species will thrive and form large colonies. The stems of the plant are subsucculent and nearly hollow so the plant is fragile.

Generally not considered toxic to pets. Deer & rabbit resistant.

For mail orders: Plants may go through shock during shipping. Upon arrival, take the plant out and water it thoroughly. If you are not satisfied with your purchase, please notify us via email at sales@amgardens.com and include a photo(s) within 24 hours of plant arrival.

For in store purchases: If you are not satisfied with your purchase, please call us at 423-870-5000 or return the plant in its original pot/condition within 3 days. Trees and shrubs have a 1 year warranty (exceptions may apply), but we highly encourage you to give us a call or email if you notice issues with your plant. We'd love to help you figure out what's wrong and save your plant! 

Orders are shipped on Wednesdays and Thursdays; if your order is placed on a Wednesday, it may not ship until the following Wednesday. During peak season there may be delays in shipping. If it is too hot or cold, we suggest ordering during milder months to ensure plants arrive in best condition.
