Downy Rattlesnake Plantain, Goodyera pubescens are definitely an interesting native native shade perennial to Tennessee. This eye-catching beauty is one of our most common woodland orchids. The white leaf markings resemble the skin of some rattlesnakes,  and the flower stalks are covered with down, giving it the common name of downy rattlesnake plantain. Interestingly enough, Rattlesnake Plantain has been used for a variety of medicinal purposes by Native Americans from infusions to treat colds and pleurisy, to a kidney tonic, to a dressing to treat burns, toothaches, and rheumatism. Again, this should be discussed with your physician prior to use. 

Care
They prefer dappled sunlight or part shade in rich, moist to dry, acidic soils and appreciate sharp drainage. It needs humus-rich soil covered with a layer of leaf litter which preserves moisture and where their mycorrhizal partners are more likely to be present. Hardy in zones 4-10.
Growth Habit
Rattlesnake is an evergreen creeping perennial found in most shady, moist forests - growing from 5-7" tall. It produces dense white flower spikes in mid to late summer. 
Toxicity

Orchids aren't poisonous. Their delicate flowers are actually edible and can be added to many exquisite dishes. In that sense, orchids are dog- and cat-safe. Deer resistant.

Trees and shrubs have a 6 month warranty (exceptions may apply), but we highly encourage you to give us a call or email if you notice issues with your plant. We'd love to help you figure out what's wrong and save your plant! 

Shipping

Orders are shipped on Wednesdays and Thursdays; if your order is placed on a Wednesday, it may not ship until the following Wednesday. During peak season there may be delays in shipping. If it is too hot or cold, we suggest ordering during milder months to ensure plants arrive in best condition.
